Group Critique

Work in progress - Julie Coghlan

One of the most helpful and supportive functions of a group such as Textilia 3 is the Group Critique.  For those unfamiliar with the technique, a member of the group will usually introduce their work, explaining their inspiration and design development and then invite the other members to comment, discuss and contribute their own ideas.  It is a terrifying experience when first encountered, but with a stable group it can become an amazing resource, stretching artistic boundaries and increasing confidence.

At Texilia 3, we have adopted a less confrontational approach:  Following our individual introductions and perhaps an indication of where we are stuck, members of the group are invited to write comments.  We are asked what we like about the piece, what works and how we might add to it.  The critique is conducted anonymously with each comment folded over, Consequences-style.  At the end of the session, each artist takes away a series of comments.  The most interesting part is the similarity of the comments and how often it is something that has been overlooked by the artist themselves!

With deadlines looming and monthly meetings missed, the opportunity for feedback from the group becomes limited.  Thankfully we are able to use an e-mail version of the technique which elicits just the same level of engagement and almost instant feedback.  This week, Julie asked for help to complete her piece for the forthcoming Thread Running Through exhibition at Cliffe Castle which opens on Saturday 9th November 2019.

Meanwhile, Catherine S was inspired by a recent workshop with Helaina Sharpley and has been experimenting with wire, embedded in fine gossamer felt and then rusted.
