Birds of a feather...

Fledgling Kepwick (photo: Catherine Slater)

Has lockdown 3 sent us barking mad or has the enforced isolation given us time to see nature in a different light?

Sometimes inspiration comes from the most unlikely sources, take this piece of wood for instance which was found by Textilia 3 member Catherine Slater whilst walking near her home.  Catherine tells me that she immediately recognised the shape of a bird within the gnarls and knots of the the bark but it has sat in her studio untouched for a few months.  The latest confinement has allowed her to finish the project by carefully embellishing the wood with wool fibres.  The piece is called Fledgling Kepwick.

The little fledgling is nice way to introduce a new project for the group.  We are using the pages of a vintage nature book Birds and Wild Animals by H Trevor Jones (published 1952) as a springboard for some new works.  Each member of the group has been sent a different set of pages for us to use in any way we choose.  My pages include pictures of owls which are delightful, although the same cannot be said for a page of snails and slugs.
