Woodland Floor by Annie Smith

Textilia 3 artist and tutor Annie Smith spent the 2021 lockdown recreating her own woodland scene, complete with life-size butterflies and mini beasts.  Drawing on her childhood hobby of lepidoptery, Annie stitched 3D wings in meticulous detail.  The simple repetitive process of stitching (with a sound track of Ru Paul's Drag Race for company) gave Annie a purpose during the long days of isolation.  Her work is testament to her observational skills and inventive blend of traditional with contemporary stitching techniques.

Annie brought her pieces for a group critique with other Textilia 3 members.  We discussed ways to improve the narrative which could provide a visual pathway through the work.  Watch out for Annie's finished piece at our forthcoming exhibition at the Mill Bridge Gallery in Skipton.
